Tips for Better Sound
- Volume (potentiometers) should not be set to maximum. If any knob needs to be turned to maximum, there is likely a setup error. Ideal position is around zero or halfway. This does not apply to DJ mixers or power amplifier volume controls.
- Before connecting or disconnecting cables, lower volume to zero, or
do this with equipment powered off. - Microphone volume must be handled carefully. When increasing level, speak into the microphone or make some sound. If volume is too high, a slight echo will appear first – this is a warning before feedback occurs. Simply increasing microphone level does not reveal the maximum possible volume (which depends mainly on the room and speaker/mic positions), and exceeding it can immediately cause feedback at full power. With powerful equipment this can be dangerous for both hearing and the equipment.
- Persistent hum can be eliminated by switching the "Ground Lift" switch to ON or Lift on the amplifier or speakers. If the system does not have this and no DI-Box is used, hum can be reduced by setting the source output (mixer, laptop, CD player) to maximum volume and reducing the amplifier volume.
- If a hiss appears when directly connecting a laptop to an amplifier, it is likely caused by laptop battery charging (unplugging the laptop from mains power should stop it). To eliminate this, follow the same procedure as for hum removal. Another option is to turn down the volume on the laptop and set the amplifier volume to the maximum.
- If bass output is suspiciously low, try disconnecting one speaker. If bass level increases, a cable is likely wired in reverse polarity (one speaker is playing out of phase). Speaker placement also plays an important role (see next point).
- Speaker placement: Maximum bass output is achieved by placing speakers on the floor in room corners or against a wall. Conversely, the least bass output occurs when speakers are placed in open space or on stands. For outdoor events, exponential enclosures are used (e.g. SUB 15). Mid/high sections should be positioned (or aimed) at ear height where possible.
- If speakers are noisy, check volume settings (see point 1), and do not hesitate to call our hotline.
- Level indicators on the amplifier may flash into the red at maximum volume, but must not stay lit permanently! Mixer level indicators should ideally be kept near the 0 level. For higher volume, increase the amplifier volume. Once the system is connected, verify the setup by testing at maximum volume.
